Imagine you are an architect building your dream home. You have done all the designs and plans and bought all the materials. All that’s left is to start building, so you had over your plans and all your resources to the builders.

The builders look at your plans skeptically. They come to you with new ones, saying they are far superior to yours. You tell them to stick to your plan and send them away. They keep coming back with complaints and doubts but each time you send them back to continue with the original plan.

A few weeks down the line you go to see the progress of the house. It is not at all how you designed it; the builders have not stuck to your plan at all. They had decided to ignore your advice and do it their way, the way they thought would be best. But it is not better at all; it is a mess, and it will take a lot to salvage it.

How would you react? I’d be pretty distressed and angry after investing so much into something so important to me.

This is an imperfect illustration which may give a glimpse into the way that we misuse the resources God has given to us. But God has not just given us resources (talents, personal qualities, money, situations etc) but he has given us life itself.

Our lives are not our own. God created us; he gives us life and everything we have. The very fact you’re reading this means God is sustaining you right now. Do you dare to turn and tell him you will do what you like with your life which belongs to you?

James 1 tells us every good gift comes from God. So who are we to use God’s gifts however we please? Who are we to give God just a small portion of our time, our money, our life. It’s all his. Who are we to hold things back from him, when he is the one who has given it to us in the first place?!

Life is not about pleasing myself, accomplishing or getting what I want, but about giving my life back to God. And the best thing about that is that when I surrender to God I get the best out of my life because my Creator knows how to guide and direct me into what is best for me. His plans are better than my plans. We might have grand designs for our lives, but God’s design is better.
